Gross Pay Explained by Payroll Experts

At Payroll Solution Services, we believe in making payroll simple, transparent, and accurate. Whether you’re a sole trader, SME, or large enterprise, understanding gross pay is fundamental to managing your payroll obligations, and your people.

As part of our outsourced payroll services, we ensure every payslip is calculated precisely, starting with gross pay. Backed by decades of payroll experience, our experts take the complexity out of payroll compliance, so you can focus on your business.

What is gross pay?

Gross pay, also known as gross wages or gross income, is the total amount an employee earns before any deductions. It includes:

  • Basic salary or hourly wages

  • Overtime pay

  • Bonuses and commissions

  • Holiday pay

  • Statutory sick or maternity pay

In short, gross pay is the full amount earned for work done, before tax, National Insurance contributions, pension deductions, and any other withholdings.

How is gross pay calculated?

Gross pay can vary depending on pay structure and employee contract. For salaried employees, it's calculated as:

Annual Salary ÷ Number of Pay Periods

For hourly workers, the calculation looks like:

Hourly Rate × Hours Worked + Overtime + Bonuses

Our payroll management system automates gross payroll calculations with built-in accuracy, factoring in contracted hours, overtime rules, and statutory entitlements, so you never miss a beat.

An example of gross pay

Sarah is in a full-time HR role, earning a fixed annual salary of £36,000. She's paid monthly, so her regular gross pay each month is calculated by dividing her annual salary by 12, giving her £3,000 per month.

At the end of the year, Sarah also earns a £500 performance bonus in recognition of her hard work. This bonus is added to her regular salary to calculate her gross pay for that month. As a result, her total gross pay for the period amounts to £3,500.

This figure - £3,500 - is what’s considered her gross pay: the full amount earned before any deductions such as Income Tax, National Insurance contributions, or pension payments are applied. It represents the starting point of her payslip, from which all statutory and voluntary deductions will be subtracted to arrive at her net (take-home) pay.

Gross pay vs net pay: what’s the difference?

Gross pay is the starting point. Net pay is what’s left after deductions.
